Who else is a dark theme fellow here? I’m personally a huge fan of dark themed apps.
There were rumors long back that WhatsApp is getting a native dark theme, but WAbetainfo just did some tweaks to the latest WhatsApp beta APK and triggered the new WhatsApp Dark mode.
For now, only the app’s settings menu has WhatsApp Dark look and chats screen looks as it was. WhatsApp’s settings menu was recently revamped, most likely in preparation for them to be compatible with both a lighter and darker color scheme.
Speaking of colors, the dark mode doesn’t use an absolute black but a very, very dark grey (#111111). This makes it OLED-friendly while also not tiring the eyes with high contrast between black and white. But a pitched dark mode would’ve been awesome.
So, can I enable the WhatsApp dark mode right now?
Well, I’m afraid you can’t. We’re not sure when this new WhatsApp Dark mode will show up in the WhatsApp app, but given that it’s still limited to settings only, I’d say we’re in for a wait before it’s implemented. WhatsApp needs to hurry though: Android Messages, Facebook Messenger, Viber, Telegram, and plenty of other competitor messaging apps have already added a dark theme.
Even though officially you can’t enable the dark mode but you can do so unofficially by either using a modified version of WhatsApp (which I would advise you not to do because WhatsApp has been banning users who are using the unofficial version of the app) or you can use a theme engine such as Substratum if you have root access.
